PUMAS OF PATAGONIA

May 30 – June 6, 2025

We know of only one place in the world where pumas, (mountain lions or cougars), can be photographed reliably. A large ranch with a spectacular landscape near Torres del Paine National Park is the grand setting for a unique opportunity to photograph this elusive big cat.

Trip timing: In late autumn (May-June in the Southern Hemisphere), pumas have developed their winter coats. Females with new cubs will be less shy than they are earlier in the season. Late autumn may also produce snow, which creates interesting photo conditions. The days will be shorter and the pumas are more active than in summer, when they sleep more. With the sun lower on the horizon, the light is more interesting.

We will move around by vehicle but will approach pumas on foot whenever possible. Generally, this will not involve extended hiking, but you should be in good physical condition and able to carry your gear for daily hikes of one or more miles.

Being a photographer is not a requirement to join us for this trip. Every participant will go home with a more intimate understanding of mountain lions.

ZAMBIA SAFARI

August 5 – 15, 2025

Zambia’s wild rivers—the Zambezi and the Luangwa—are magnets for wildlife and they are the prime destinations for an exclusive new African safari designed by Frans and Chris. They know Zambia well from assignments they produced for National Geographic (download it here), and they will channel their expertise for a safari experience that includes opportunities to observe hippos and crocodiles eye-to-eye from hides, and to photograph the classic wildlife of the African bush—from lions, leopards, and elephants, to buffalo, giraffe, and elusive wild dogs.

ALASKA BROWN BEARS: UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL

August 25 – September 5, 2025

The brown bears of Alaska’s Katmai Coast can be remarkably tolerant of people when they are approached with respect and understanding. It is an extraordinary privilege to encounter them the way we do for the purpose of photographing them up close and personal.

For 2025 we have chartered a spacious, family-operated boat which has been designed for these waters. We will explore prime bear locations along the remote Katmai coast for 8 days. Our boat will enable us to relocate ourselves to take advantage of optimal local conditions. We work with local guides who know the coast and the bears intimately, and we bring to this experience our own knowledge of working with wild animals on their own terms for more than 30 years.

Our trip is timed for early fall, when the days are shorter and the light is more interesting.

GREENLAND

Summer, 2025

We are developing a new trip to the spectacular west coast of Greenland, an epic landscape of towering icebergs, steep fjords, and rolling tundra. But Greenland and the high Arctic are warming twice as fast as the global average and the massive ice cap is melting fast. This trip is designed to give you a chance to witness what is happening in the most dramatic, yet accessible, region in the high Arctic. This expeditionary voyage will be primarily boat-based, with opportunities to cruise among the mountainous icebergs calving off the fastest moving glacier in the world. Contact us to be informed about this unique journey.
