BROWN BEARS, ALASKA: UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL

August 23 – 29, 2027

Join us for a unique opportunity to experience the brown bears of Alaska’s Katmai region—a landscape of towering mountains, crystalline streams, and pristine wilderness. The bears here are remarkably tolerant of people because they have not been hunted or harassed for decades. It is an extraordinary privilege to be among them—and to observe and photograph them up close and personal.

In 2027, we will operate from a remote lodge in a strategic location. Bush planes will fly us to the best bear locations each day, which enables us to cover an area of thousands of square miles of wilderness and a variety of bear habitats. We work with great guides and pilots, and we bring to this experience our own knowledge of working with wild animals. Our trip is scheduled for late summer, when the bears are fishing for salmon.

While this trip is a fantastic photographic opportunity, you don’t have to be a photographer to join. We regularly have couples on the trip with only one partner carrying a big camera. It is a rich natural history experience for photographers and non-photographers alike!

The activity level for this experience is moderate, with field trips that may involve up daily hikes of up to 4 miles over uneven terrain. You should be in good physical condition and be able to carry your own gear.

WILD EAST GREENLAND BY TALL SHIP

September 9 – 21, 2027

Join us for a once-in-a lifetime expedition to one of the most spectacular and least visited landscapes on Earth—the East Coast of Greenland. Our destination for this photographic journey is Scoresbysund, the largest fjord system on the planet, which features shimmering icebergs, towering granite peaks, and awesome glaciers.

Our trip is timed for a period when autumn will bring the tundra alive with color. At night, there is a good chance to see the Northern Lights glow with shifting ribbons of greens and purples.

Our home base for this journey is a classic tall ship—the three-masted Dutch schooner Rembrandt van Rijn. She can accommodate more than 30 passengers, but we are limiting our group size to just 18 guests to allow for a more intimate experience.

Our journey starts and ends in Reykjavik, Iceland. A chartered aircraft will fly us to a remote airfield in East Greenland, where our adventure will begin. Every day will unfold according to light, weather, and opportunity.

This trip is a joint venture between Frans Lanting Productions and Visionary Wild. Frans and Chris will be joined as trip leaders by Chris Linder, an experienced Arctic science and adventure photographer.

After we return to Reykjavik, an optional 5-day Iceland extension will be led by Frans Lanting. It will feature great opportunities to photograph coastal and geothermal landscapes along with helicopter flights.
